Jason Helmes Ex Royal Australian Navy Clearance Diver Like most kids I started training in tae kwon do in year 7 and did so until the end of year 12. I was then accepted into the navy as a diver during which time we trained mostly in boxing and military unarmed combat skills. When I left the navy in 1994 I started searching for a martial art school that provided what I would call realistic self defense. I tried Wing Chun at several different schools then Ninjutsu and Aikido, Judo, Karate both Goshin Ryu and Shotokan but was not happy with all the forms and patterns that were being taught. I decided to forget martial arts and started boxing again this time at Sydney Uni. The different types of wrestling and grappling that were shown interested me so I started Brazilian Jujitsu first with Anthony Lang then with Mick Spinks who also taught boxing at his gym. Although I was very happy with the intensity and general toughness of Mick and his classes I still had a desire to find someone who could demonstrate real internal power to me in a non rehearsed way. One day Mick said to me if you just want to learn how to tear someone to shreds go and see this guy named Marko Vesse I’ve heard he can do some amazing things. I contacted Marko and after a lengthy phone conversation that felt more like an interview than a general enquiry I was invited to his home for a demo. The first thing he said to me was show me what you can do I felt very confident so I tried to show him an elbow technique against his fist, needless to say it didn’t work and he proceeded to show me his incredible power and how it could be used with any part of his body from anywhere. That was back in 1999 and I have been honored to call Marko my Master ever since. Now I am teaching Wu Xing Dao under Master Vesse and have a branch in Port Stephens where I live. I also currently travel to Sydney twice a week to study under Marko and to teach students of my own. |
